Differences between technical and tactical performance of scoring the first point in different weight categories of Greco-Roman wrestling at the Olympic Games

The aim of this paper is to determine the differences between technical and tactical performance of scoring the first point in different weight categories of Greco-Roman wrestling at the Olympic Games. Respondents sample consists of 60 top wrestlers in Greco-Roman style, participants in the wrestling competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Only semi- final fights, third place fights and final fights were included in the analysis. Wrestlers participated in the weight categories: up to 59, up to 66, up to 75, up to 85, up to 98 and up to 130 kilograms. Three experts independently conducted the notational analysis of first technical-tactical element in last five fights of each category. The obtained data indicate high percentage of active wrestling in first point of the match (66.66%) and lower percentage of 33.3 for the first point in the fight due to inactivity of fighter (passivity). The highest percentage was obtained in four categories out of six (80% of the first point was won by activity of wrestler, while 20% was for passivity). The lowest percentage of active point won was achieved in the category up to 85 kilograms, where in only one fight first point was won by activity of the wrestler. Change of rules made wrestling more attractive and direct consequence is that more first points in the match were won by activity of the wrestler, than it was before rule change, when more first points were won by wrestlers for passivity.
