Oral mucosal lesions in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2
Aim: To asses the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2. Subjects and methods: The study included 52 patients with DM type 2 and 52 control participants without DM. The participants were examined and the presence of oral mucosal lesions were recorded in accordance with World Health Organisation protocol. Results: The patients with DM had statistically significant more oral mucosal lesions than control participants (P=0.006). At least one oral mucosal lesion had 86.54% patients with DM. The most common lesions in patients with DM were coated tongue (50%), oral mucosa inflamation (38.46%), atrophic tongue (34.62%) and denture palatitis (21.12%). Conclusion: The results of this study have showed high prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in patients with DM. These findings indicate the necessity of preventing programmes toward promoting and improvement of oral health in patients with DM.
