Cognitive Impairment In Cancer Patients
Introduction: Previous data in literature indicates a large number of cancer patients exhibiting signs of cognitive impairment at the time of diagnosis, during treatment or many years after successful treatment. We present the results of our research in measuring the cognitive function in patients as well as a review of other risk factors for cognitive impairment in these patients. Methods: Using a Complex Reactiometar Drenovac, we measured cognitive functions in 200 newly diagnosed, therapy naive oncological-hematological patients (grouped by type of the tumour). In our research we used the following tests: test of convergent thinking, spatial visualization, visual orientation, learning and memory, operative thinking, reaction on sound and test of reaction on light. Results: Anemia and age were proven to be the most significant factors associated with cognitive dysfunction (p <0.001) but other reasons as well as renal dysfunction, sleep deprivation, dehydration, certain laboratory parameters, and certain drugs (chemotherapy, corticosteroids, analgesic, sedative) could influence cognitive functions too . Conclusions: It is necessary to be aware of cognitive impairment in cancer patients. Early recognition and correction of some reversible factors (anemia, dehydration, choice of therapy etc.) could significantly improve patients cognition and by this also improve their QoL.
