Presenting Dalmatia: Emperor’s Franz Joseph I travel through Dalmatia in 1875

During April and May 1875 emperor Frances Joseph I visited east Adriatic coast. In the Viennese press this journey was characterized as a support to the most backward province of the Monarchy, an impetus for its economic advancement, but this journey was provoked by delicate political “eastern question” and final division of western parts of Ottoman Empire. Originally was planned in 1869, within the itinerary of the trip to the East, at the opening of the Suez Canal, but was postponed and Dalmatian governor Gabrijel Rodić received an order to organize a travel plan in January 1875. This travel included numerous cities, islands and villages of Dalmatia, and was meticulously described in a few illustrated publications. Descriptions revealed interior of private cabins of yacht Miramare, emperor’s meals, his company aboard, protocol for his hosts, decorations and weather conditions during his long journey through Dalmatia. Educational, health and museum facilities and sacral objects were part of emperors itinerary and in some segments, his journey repeated the itinerary of Emperor Francis I visit of Dalmatia in June and July 1818 during his Croatian tour. Selection of heritage cites reveals the awareness of representative segments of certain areas, antique and medieval objects. Also, it illustrated state of region, showed official attitude of government to certain topics and future development plans and focused publicity on areas of exceptional natural beauty and outstanding examples of heritage.
