The Role of Mindfulness in Intimate Relationships

Cognition and beliefs about a romantic partner have a central role in determining and directing emotional and physical reactions between partners. Meanwhile, in the field of romantic relationship cognition, roles of ideal standards and cognitive bias are not yet fully clarified. The creation of positive illusions and tendency of controlling ones partner’s actions represent strategies for coping with discrepancy between the ideal standards and objective characteristics of a partner. On the other hand, the acceptance of the negative partner characteristics and behavior, without the need to change them, represents another, more effective coping strategy. Partner acceptance is largely based upon the consciousness of one's own emotional reactions that are brought into the relationship. Therefore, as a relatively new and yet not fully researched construct, mindfulness might hold a significant role in the field of relationship cognition. The aim of this research was to clarify the connection between mindfulness and constructs of relationship cognition (positive illusions, partner acceptance, and perceived partner’s control) in regard to relationship satisfaction. The research included 106 heterosexual couples, aged from 18 to 38 years, who were together for not less than six months. The research was conducted online, during January 2020, via an e-questionnaire that included the following instruments: the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (Brown & Ryan, 2003), the Interpersonal Qualities Scale (Murray et. al., 1996a), the Intimate Adult Acceptance Rejection Questionnaire – the Control Subscale (Rohner, 2006), The Frequency and Acceptability of Partner Behavior Inventory (Doss & Christensen, 2006) and one-item measure of relationship satisfaction. Prior participating, each participant was given a unique five-digit code by which dyad members were differentiated. Based upon a conducted regression analyses, significant contribution of relationship cognition constructs in explaining the overall variance of relationship satisfaction has been found. However, the significance of predictors differed depending on the participants' gender. Mindfulness, positive illusions, acceptance of partner’s characteristics and behavior, and perceived control of one’s partner, emerged to be significant positive predictors of relationship satisfaction among women. On the other hand, positive illusions were found to be the sole positive predictor of men’s relationship satisfaction. The given results are considered in the context of better understanding relationship cognition and probable gender differences regarding intimate partner interaction.
