New three-node plate and membrane finite elements
New three-node plate and membrane finite elements are presented for linear-elastic static analysis of plate bending and plane stress problems with small deformations. The plate finite element is developed in accordance to the Mindlin plate theory and by utilizing linked interpolation. The element passes the constant bending patch test and it is completely free of shear locking which makes it suitable for analysis of very thin to thick plate cases. The membrane element with drilling degrees of freedom (drilling rotations) is developed. The element passes the constant strain patch test and has no spurious zero-energy modes. Both elements are suitable to be joined together to form a flat shell element for analysis of general shell structures.
