Tracing possible victims of the 16th/17th century plagues in western Istria: Bioarchaeological analysis of a mass Grave from Umag
In this paper we present the results of the bioarchaeological analysis of skeletal remains retrieved from a mass burial dated to the 16th- 17th century AD from Umag in Istria, Croatia. Numerous written historical documents indicate that Umag was hit by several outbreaks of bubonic plague between the 15th and 17th centuries that had a tremendous effect on the town’s development and population in general. Additionally, these sources also mention that the region experienced frequent outbreaks of cholera and malaria resulting in an almost complete depopulation. Therefore, the remains of at least 32 individuals of both sexes and all age groups from the mass grave (Burial 2) were studied with the aim to verify whether the remains of the victims of plague and/or other diseases that were prevalent at the time in western Istria were buried in this fashion, but also to reconstruct the lifestyle and health patterns of the inhabitants of Umag during the 16th and 17th centuries.
