Porosity of Reverse Osmosis Membranes for Water Treatment
Porosities of commercial and laboratory-made reverse osmosis membranes expressed by their pore size, pore size distribution (PSD) and the effective number of pores were determined and compared in order to explain their performances. The obtained results have shown that the best membrane performance, i.e. the highest separation and productivity, is associated with a unimodal pore size distribution and the biggest number of effective pores on the membrane surface. As soon as the PSD of a membrane becomes bimodal with a second mode at a bigger pore size, and the effective number of pores in the membrane upper layer decreases, the membrane performance declines. The electrical charge on the membrane surface plays also an important role.
