Unconventional Audio Signal Processing: Aloe Vera Summing and Panning
Audio signal summing is surprisingly lively field that might seem technically trivial but enjoys great attention from audio professionals. It is argued that analogue summing offers headroom and stage detail that surpasses the digital counterpart. Technically speaking, digital summing suffers from quantization errors, however they are widely considered inaudible. Electronics induce anomalies like harmonic distortion, intermodulation distortion and uneven spectral response that can be held responsible for the audible character. This paper presents an investigation of audio transfer that exhibits some of the desired properties and also allows of exaggerated distortion that might be artistically desired. Most of all, the presented technique for panning and mixing of audio signals lends itself to extended experimentation with an unreliable medium, and mystification of using plant tissue. Future work points away from mystifying the contribution of living and dying plant tissue towards analysis of chemical solutions that allow for more precise and wider ranging control of audio transfer.
