Conversion and developmental potential of abandoned military sites: a case study of military barrack sites within the city of Šibenik
The transformation of military sites and their integration into the city of Šibenik is of great interest in the context of sustainable and social development. Šibenik is a city with a rich military heritage, and because of its position in the urban fabric, military buildings and sites have been a factor in its uneven spatial development for years. Previous research recognizes the importance of the spatial placement of military brownfield spaces within the city of Šibenik and its relationship to the intensity of transformation. One of the most significant obstacles to transformation is lack of adequate location data and objectivity in assessing their development potential. As the basis of planning activities, adequate spatial analysis, and identification of the possibility of integrating military brownfield sites into the urban fabric are crucial for a sustainable reconstruction process. The paper provides an overview of the state of abandoned military barrack sites and explores transformations and integration of those sites in the city of Šibenik from an urban and planning point of view, and the interrelationship of planning activities and reuse of military barrack sites, which are explored and recognized as a social and developmental potential of the city. The survey includes ten barracks and their wider contact space. The research approach is based on mapping, spatial planning documentation analysis, and field research, in order to determine spatial characteristics and recognize different approaches of transformation and integration of military barrack sites. The paper concludes the development and social potential of abandoned military sites and paves the way for improving existing models of their sustainable conversion for the local community use and different purposes.
