Mundo Maya : sustainable tourism development project
Mundo Maya is an inter-regional tourist project aiming at sustainable development of regions that once formed Mayan world - imposing civilization, which developed in Yucatan and surrounding areas around 500 BC. Today it encompasses an area of more than 500 000 km2 in Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintanna Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas as well as Central American states El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize. Important natural geographical feature of the region is ecosystem of tropical rain forest that dominates the area. Biodiversity and numerous historical and cultural monuments as well as richness of life in indigenous Indian communities make this region potentially important tourist destination. Mundo Maya Organization is developing the area in a "multi-destination /diverse-offering option". Integration of beach resort tourism in Cancun, Belize and Conzumel with mentioned Mayan region in which adventure and eco tourism are main tourist activities is important because "these corridors will allow the growth of new tourism trends, generated by market demands".
