Potential benefits of using controlled switching technique in 400 kV network for mitigation of switching overvoltages
This paper deals with transients caused by switching of uncompensated 400 kV transmission lines with capacitive voltage transformers installed at both line ends. Energization and automatic reclosure of transmission line were analysed by using EMTP-RV software. The simulation results showed that the controlled switching significantly reduces switching overvoltages, transient current and energy stress of station metal-oxide surge arresters in case of the transmission line energization and auto-reclosure. Consequently, this reduces mechanical and electromagnetic stresses of the high voltage equipment, and also prevents the unwanted operation of relay protection. The controlled switching can improve the reliability of restrike-free performance of circuit breakers. It can also provide economic benefits such as elimination of closing resistors and reduction of the insulation level of high- voltage equipment.
