Model of Static Var Compensator Connected to the Power Transmission Network for Electromagnetic Transient Studies
Static var compensator (SVC) models for electromagnetic transient studies must accurately represent the SVC characteristics for steady state, dynamic and transient conditions. Studies in the specification development and design stages must evaluate the interaction between the SVC and the network for many different transient conditions. SVC considered in this paper consists of two thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR) branches. SVC model for simulation of electromagnetic transients was developed in EMTP-RV software. It includes detailed models of TCRs, harmonic filters, power transformer and control systems of SVC. Dynamic response of SVC to voltage changes at the connection point is investigated. The efficiency of the fifth and seventh harmonic filters for the different modes of SVC operation were analysed as well as the influence of SVC operation on the harmonics in the transmission network. Dynamic response of SVC is analysed during several electromagnetic transients such as SVC energization and fault application/clearance events in the surrounding transmission network.
