Relations of goalkeepers’ situational efficiency and teams’ final placement in top level female and male handball

The main goal of the study was determination of situational power differences between 6 playing positions in top level male handball. Variables included ; body height (BH) and body weight (BW), fastest shot (FS), fastest sprint (FSP), highest jump (HJ), and average game time (AM). Subjects were 412 handball players that participated at European handball championship held in Austria, Norway and Sweden 2020. Data from EHC official website were analyzed. Statistical analyses included the calculation of descriptive statistical parameters and analysis of variance with post-hoc Scheffe test. Results show significant differences between playing positions in all assessed variables. Biggest differences were noticed in anthropometrical characteristics, with significant differences between back and pivot players on one side and wing players on the other. Back players have fastest and RW slowest shots among all playing positions. Fastest sprinting was recorded for wing positions, specifically for LW that, with 29, 09 km/h, were significantly faster than all back (LB, RB and CB) and pivot positions. When compared with sprinting and shooting, jumping performance showed most diversity between playing positions - back players jump significantly higher than other positions (for 16, 76 cm). All differences have foundation in position role and typical game situations.

jump, sprint, shoot, back player, wing player, pivot player
