Stabilzacija nanočestica srebra proteinima i površinski aktivnim tvarima u morskoj vodi

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are the most widely used type of nanoparticles due to their antimicrobial properties. Nevertheless, their arrival and persistence in natural waters is unwished-for due to the toxic effects of colloidally stable AgNP on aquatic organisms. Current studies indicate that AgNP are rapidly aggregating and settling out of the marine water column. The aim of this thesis is to examine the effect of naturally occurring potential stabilizers on AgNP colloidal stability in seawater. Results have shown that model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA) has a stabilizing effect on silver nanoparticles in artificial seawater when the salinity is between 5 and 38 and BSA to AgNP mass ratios are between 133:1 and 3332:1. Under the same conditions, silver nanoparticles dissolute more slowly in the presence of BSA. Dispersion of AgNP is partly stabilized in artificial seawater by serum proteins from hemolymph of Mediterranean mussel M. galloprovincialis and serum proteins from coelomic fluid of sea urchin P. lividus. Only nonionic surfactants successfully stabilized silver nanoparticles, among which Tween 80 showed the most pronounced stabilizing effect in filtered and non-filtered natural seawater. Interestingly, stabilization of AgNP with Tween 80 in artificial seawater did not occur. In the presence of model (montmorillonite) and natural sediment from Lim Bay, same surfactant slowed down the heteroaggregation of nanoparticles with sediment particles. If AgNP are already stabilized with surfactants when entering seawater, they are less susceptible to heteroaggregation. Results from this thesis provide a foundation for further research on long-term colloidal stability of silver and other hydrophobic nanoparticles in different niches of marine ecosystem.
