Development of apisirup based on dry extracts of medicinal herbs

In recent years, interest for functional products based on honey and medicinal herbs are raising. Today, medicine is going back to the nature and is looking for answers in medicinal herbs. The development and production of new supplements such as apisirups based on bee products and medicinal herbs represent an innovative, sustainable and environmentally friendly way of processing honey and bee products. Medicinal herb extracts that can be added to apisirups are complex mixtures of a large number of bioactive compounds possessing a wide spectrum of bioactivities and thus a large potential on market. In order to expand the use of honey and medicinal herbs and to enhance their health effect, the development of new products that combine these raw materials with the addition of other bee products is often demanded. Also, during the production of such products, it is important to know a whole range of technological parameters in order to obtain the highest quality product that would find a place on the market with its quality and recognizability. Since the demand for these products is constantly growing, the aim of this paper is to show some possibilities of using honey, bee products and medicinal herbs in the preparation of apisirup. Special emphasis will be on the production of dry extracts of medicinal herbs. The use of extracts in powder form offers certain advantages over liquid forms such as prolonged stability, easier handling and transport, a higher concentration of bioactive compounds, standardization and easier quality control. Standardization is the biggest advantage of dry form since there is a specific amount of bioactive compound in a small volume, which enables more precise and easier dosing. Therefore, the application of new technologies and the development of new products based on honey and bee products can significantly improve existing processing practices and expand the available product range.
