Roditeljska manipulacija djecom - oblik emocionalnog zlostavljanja
PARENTAL MANIPULATION WITH CHILDREN AS A FORM OF EMOTIONAL ABUSE V. HERCIGONJA-NOVKOVIĆ, G. BULJAN-FLANDER and D. KOCIJAN-HERCIGONJA Kocijan/Hercigonja Polyclinic, Zagreb, Croatia The paper describes parental manipulation with children as one of the common forms of emotional abuse that leads to serious problems in the child’s development. Manipulation is as yet inadequately recognized form of abuse and even when detected, the child stays with the manipulating parent due to system inefficiency. Results of many studies show that manipulated children exhibit numerous mental aberrations already in childhood, whereas in adult age they more frequently manifest depression, addiction including alcoholism, and signs of alienation from their own family, children in particular. The aim is therefore to present the problem of manipulation with children as one of the form of emotional abuse with longstanding consequences for the child’s development and mental health. Manipulation is one of the common forms of parental approach on divorce proceedings and results from numerous parental uncompleted processes or from their psychopathology. The state-of-the-art on the causes and consequences of manipulation are presented, along with the authors’ experiences collected during their work with such families and their children.
