Iatrogenic open bite – presentation of clinical cases
Aims: To present two open bite cases with iatrogenic origin. Materials and Methods: Case 1. Open bite caused by active plates type Schwarz appliance in upper and lower jaw. Expansion of the dental arches with active plates resulted in excessive tipping of the teeth in a female teenager with bimaxillary protrusion and class III tendency. Treatment plan included fixed multibracket appliance in both jaws and intermaxillary elastics for uprighting teeth and adjustment of occlusal relationships between maxillary and mandibular dentition. Case 2. Open bite caused by occlusal splint used as protection against tooth wear during night bruxism in adolescent female with bimaxillary protrusion and tendency to class III relationship. Treatment plan included extraction of all four wisdom teeth and fixed multibracket appliance in both jaws, with intermaxillary elastics for adjustment of occlusion. Results: Closure of open bite in both cases was achieved after removal of iatrogenic cause and comprehensive treatment plan, in one case with extraction of teeth, a in another in non- extraction manner. Conclusions: Open bite of iatrogenic origin can have different clinical appearance, and the resolution might include extraction of posterior teeth in treatment plan.
