Research avenues in language for specific purposes

Over the last three decades language for specific purposes has been striving and ultimately deservedly has succeeded in achieving the status of a respected research area within applied linguistics. Language of a subject field, its terminology as well as its grammatical and stylistic features have emerged to create a domain of interest of numerous researchers but also of subject field experts, who share an interest in an area of language that, apart from having inevitable links with general language on the one hand, has proved to possess its authentic distinguishing features on the other. With time, research into subject matters associated with language for specific purposes has increased in variety, quantity and quality alike, thus covering a myriad of topics from various points of view, using diverse methodologies and addressing multifarious subjects (learners, teachers, employees in different subject fields, etc.), corpora, etc. Consequently, the body of research has grown to produce a significant body of knowledge disseminated not only through various types of academic publications, but also through international conferences, symposia, meetings, seminars, workshops, etc. The analysis focuses on topics of articles published in academic journals as well as on topics of talks given at international conferences on language for specific purposes. Attention is aimed at major clusters of topics, and also on studies which, although in some cases only sporadic, contribute to the overall picture of the language for specific purposes-related research output. Additional aspects (e.g., the diachronic one) are considered to complement the investigation and supply valuable information to the overall survey. The study yields an insight into the array of the past and present research avenues, but it also points to possible paths for future inquiry.
