Imperial propaganda at domus lararium, Lares as a repercussion of the Imperial Cult
The Lares were originally patron gods, guardians of the boundaries of rural estates and fields. Since the care of the farm included the protection of the house, they also became family deities, and each farm had its own individual Lara (Lares Familiares). By spreading the cult in the city, they also became protectors of roads, intersections (compita) and were worshiped as Lares Viales, Lares Compitales. Their cult was organized and supervised by freedmen, slaves, or Roman citizens of modest status, especially in the shrines of the Compitalia in the local quarters (vici). Emperor Augustus, as the restorer of the traditional Roman religion, endowed the existing gods of the intersection of the sanctuary (Lares Compitales) with the additional epithet of his own name Augustus (Lares Augusti) and thus associated them with the princess.
