On Characterization of Dielectric Properties of Non-standard Materials Using a Low-cost Resonator Circuit

In design of flexible and wearable electronics, radio- and microwave- circuits, engineers nowadays face a task of having to sufficiently accurately determine dielectric properties of non-standard substrate materials, such as various fabrics, in order to properly design circuit of their interest, such as textile antennas, substrate- integrated waveguides and similar circuits. It is known that determination of dielectric properties is in fact a subtle task, even nowadays, having sophisticated hardware and software, due to various factors that are involved in that, such as the dependence of the dielectric properties on various factors and sensitivity of the obtained results to various inherent imperfections during the measurement session. Even though several measurement methods are widely known to do the job, depending on the type of the material sample to be characterized, each with its common advantages and limitations. It turns out that even the most advanced and quite costly measurements apparatuses that are offered by leading vendors, are accompanied with quite liberal ranges of measurement accuracy and disclaimers in terms of the measurement conditions that must be met. Given that fact, an alternative approach to that can be to prepare our own, low-cost, measurement setup and do measurements that can ultimately be satisfactory for our practical purposes. Although this topic has been tackled in some earlier papers, and they address it as everything has been worked out, after a careful reading, one will hardly find a complete, clear, consistent, and verifiable measurement procedure described in that prior art (at least publicly published works), which spontaneously lead to re-visit the topic. In this talk, we will discuss the characteristics, accuracy ranges, and measurement limitations when a microstrip ring-resonator is used as the basis for measurement of relative permittivity and loss tangent of a material sample. Results of analytical model, measurements, and full-wave simulations will be compared and their characteristics discussed.
