Isotope fractionation - application in radiocarbon dating
Presentation about isotope fractionation with its application in radiocarbon dating consisting of: defining quantities, terms and effects (with examples and questions), pesenting 13C isotope distribution in global carbon reservoirs, physical and chemical conditions influencing the fractionation of 13C in samples from nature (in CO2, as carbonates and bioorganic molecules, in physical and chemical reactions with emphasise on photosynthesis), influence of reservoir effect and dietary habits on 13C composition (δ13C), overview of stable isotopes measurement techniques, which are relevant for radiocarbon dating and how to use isotope data obtained from different equipment (AMS or IRMS). The presentation emphasize importance of correction / normalization of 14C data to 13C isotope fractionation (with example and a question). It also demonstrates the mathematical procedure for obtaining conventional radiocarbon age from “raw” 14C activity which can then be used in calibration curve.
