Submerged coastal structures of the ancient settlement in the bay of Caska (island of Pag, Croatia)

The Croatian island of Pag was part of Liburnia, the most Romanized part of the province of Dalmatia. The most important settlement on the island, Cissa, stated by Pliny the Elder (Nat. His. III, 140), is thought to be located by the largest valley known as Novaljsko polje, which had the unique potential to be surrounded by three natural bays: the bay of Novalja (set on the main Eastern Adriatic seafaring route), Stara Novalja and Caska. Caska is the archaeological site where the curious and impressive archaeological monuments are located. On land the necropolis, part of the Late Roman settlement and the storage part of a productive complex with dolia has been unearthed. The underwater excavations, directed by Irena Radić Rossi (University of Zadar) and Giulia Boetto (Centre Camille Jullian, Université Aix- Marseille–CNRS), discovered port structures and two ships from the 1st c. AD (a sewn and a mortise-tenon built ship), that have been reused in the 2nd c. for the construction of piers and wharfs. We present a partially excavated submerged structure made of five rectangular wooden caissons, constructed with overlapping trunks fitted by the corners following the Block-bau system, with poles in mortises and the filling with stones without any mortar. A thick layer of vegetal residues nearby and a concentration of murex shells are of great interest. The structure, with some analogies in the Southern France and Black Sea region, was probably an operative platform.
