Recognizing colours in the cargo of sunken ships: detection and identification
Colouring materials recovered from archaeological sites supply significant data. Preserved in raw form, they provide answers to historically important questions about use and trade in decorative materials, medicines and spices. While there are numerous testaments to the existence of colouring materials at terrestrial archaeological sites, only a dozen underwater archaeological sites containing colouring materials have been reported. This paper discusses the preservation of colouring materials in shipwreck cargoes and addresses the issues of their detection in the underwater environment. Based on the experience of the author during the excavations of the Gnalić shipwreck, suggested practices for temporary storage of colouring materials found during underwater archaeological projects are provided, with the aim to stabilize materials and avoid creation of alterations.
