WW1 Memoryscapes in the Northern Adriatic

The First World War dramatically changed the political borders in the Northern Adriatic as empires collapsed and new countries emerged in a period of both terrible loss as well as hopes for a better future. However, tensions in this multilingual and multicultural region continued after the guns fell silent, as the memory of the war was used by all of the post-war countries to justify territorial changes, offer an explanation for the mass loss of life, and legitimate new claims for expansion. Italy, Austria, and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) all built war memorials not only to remember the fallen soldiers, but to lay claim to the territory through its memoryscape. This was particularly visible in contested regions such as southern Tyrol, Istria and the Soča Valley, as well as in the cities of Trieste, Pula, and Rijeka/Fiume. The memoryscapes of the First World War in these borderlands, shaped by shifting memory politics over the past century, reflect contested identities and conflicts but also cross-border cooperation as well as the potential of remembrance tourism.
