Acceptance of Machine Translation by Croatian Translators
The purpose of this research is to find out to what extent Croatian translators have embraced machine translation (MT), what factors influence their acceptance of MT as well as the degree of their satisfaction with that technology. As Croatian is a small language, the language technologies have not been developing at the pace of those for English, French and other world languages. According to the Language Industry Survey, Google Translate remains the most widely used tool for Croatian, not least because it is freely available. Better results for the EU topics are only achieved by the European Commission’s eTranslation system, which is available to public administration, SMEs, university language faculties and CEF projects. An important feature of the Croatian translation market is that 80% of providers are free-lance translators, the rest of the market being small enterprises with up to 9 employees (Eurostat). Such fragmentation of the translation market, and relative weakness of individual players, undoubtedly affects the development of language technologies for Croatian language.
