Textbook of forensic odonto-stomatology by IOFOS

This textbook introduces the reader to the wide scientific area known as forensic odontology. The book was edited by prof. dr. sc. Hrvoje Brkić, who acquired the knowledge not only through professional and scientific endeavours, but also as an active member of the identification team working on the victims of the Homeland war in Croatia (1991-1995). Co-editors and all the authors have dedicated many years to the work in forensic odontology and have also acquired their knowledge through scientific and professional work. They are all keen to share this with the generations of future forensic odontologists. The book is systematically divided in seventeen chapters, starting with a chapter on forensic odontology and the foundation of the International Organization of Forensic Odontologists (IOFOS) that is sponsoring the publication of the textbook. Second chapter deals with the procedures that should be known by the dentists when cooperating in the identification of unknown persons. Third chapter describes the procedure of dental identification in detail. Technical conditions and methodology of identification, dental status, radiological methods, and photography of the situation on the remains, as well as the evaluation of the documentation, are explained. Fifth chapter concentrates on DNA analysis of dental tissues. Sixth chapter describes in detail the methods needed to estimate age of adults based on teeth, either when estimating the biological profile of unidentified remains and in archaeology, or in legal procedures when age of living persons are discussed. It can be said that dental status is an equal marker of identity as DNA. The textbook continues with a chapter on the organization of teams for victim identification in mass graves, in which a dentist is an obligatory member. This chapter also includes standards that need to be followed in order to identify a person. Specific mechanical injury – human bite – is described in detain in chapter ten. Abuse is more frequent in children and elderly, and between intimate partners. Marks are usually seen on the skin around the mouth, lips, soft tissues in the mouth and the teeth. This is discussed in chapter eleven. Estimation of the gravity of the injury to the teeth and jaw for the use in the legal procedures is described in the twelfth chapter. Chapter thirteen is about a dentist taking part as a court witness in legal procedures. The textbook ends with a chapter on the education in forensic odontology in undergraduate and postgraduate education and its position in the curricula of dental medicine. As the identification process is an interdisciplinary problem, this book will be useful to all team members who will be familiar with the achievements of forensic dentistry and improve mutual cooperation.
