World Trade Organization (WTO): The EU's influential role in global trade policy

The chapter examines EU engagement in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The first part of the chapter looks at the formal status of the EU in the WTO. It also assesses the position of states joining the EU and Member States leaving the EU. The second part analyses the EU’s substantive role in the WTO, particularly in dispute settlement. It examines the extent to which the EU can use the WTO system to promote a regulator friendly system of global governance, and to export its values. It also assesses whether the EU’s trade disputes are coherent with its internal market case law.
