An approximate solution for stress distributions in girders with multi-cell cross-sections
Prismatic thin-walled girders with multi-cell cross-section can be considered as an assembly of membrane strips. In this paper an analytical solution for stress distributions in the girder flanges is given. The flanges are considered as wide membrane strips, loaded by line loads in the longitudinal direction (shear forces). The plane stress problem is solved approximately, assuming that changes of cross-section contour dimension and the normal stress in the cross-section contour direction can be ignored in the shear strain-displacements relation and the strain in the longitudinal direction-stresses relation, respectively. A comparison with the finite element calculation is given.
