Croatian tourism and economy in the age of Corona: reflections on the unsustainability of the current economic model
The pandemic of COVID-19 disease caused by the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) started in March 2020. That caused a slowdown or hibernation of numerous economic activities. Activities of trade, transport, travel, and similar services, were heavily affected both globally and in the Republic of Croatia. The importance of tourism in the Croatian economy is incredibly significant because foreign exchange revenues from tourism accounted for 19.4 per cent of the GDP and 37.3 per cent of export revenues in 2019. According to the Croatian National Bank (CNB), tourism revenues for 2020 have shown that the expected foreign exchange share of tourism in GDP is going to be 8.9% (the 2019/2020 index is 45.4). The goal of this paper is to explore the sustainability of the current economic model. The paper analyses the existing tourism economic model, which is not sustainable in the long term. The crisis of tourism is an indicator of the unsustainability of the current economic model. It is necessary to seek solutions for a sustainable model of growth and development.
