Taxonomic composition of filamnetous bacteria and algae in epiphytic communities of karstic lakes
The Plitvice Lakes lies in the central part of Dinaric Karst region in Croatia. Eutrophication of the lakes has increased during the last twenty years. The lakes bottom became cowered by aquatic vegetation. Increased density of sawgrass (Cladium mariscus Pohl) coated with attached community has been recently recorded, indicating gradual eutrophycation. Phytoplankton, epiphyton and macrophytes, control food web dynamics in the lakes, providing valuable indications of water quality. The aim of investigation was to establish: taxonomic composition, frequency of appearance and abundance of microphyte species in the epiphyton community as well as the saprobity degree. Epiphyton, from live and dead stems of sawgrass, was carried out at seven sampling points along longitudinal profile of lakes. A total of 125 taxa, mostly diatoms, were determined. The composition of epiphytic communities on live and dead stems was significantly different (p<0.01), probably due to different content and quantity of organic matter. On live stems 64 taxa, and 113 taxa on dead stems were established. Only 42% of species were common to both types of substrates. The highest frequent and abundant species were common to the both types of stems, and all of them were diatoms. Massive development of filamentous bacteria (Sphaerotilus natans Kütz.), cyanobacteria (Lyngbya limnetica Lemm.), and green algae (Cladophora globulina Kütz.), indicators of higher trophic level, were observed on dead stems. Their increased abundance provided higher saprobic index (2.3), while on live stems it was 1.5.
