New Challenges for Performance Evaluation of Enterprises in Transition: A Case Study of Croatia and Slovenia

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of research regarding the performance evaluation of small and medium enterprises in transition from the creditor point of view. On many countries in transition, such as Croatia and Slovenia, the primary providers of capital for small and medium sized enterprises are local banks. To make an appropriate allocation of their limited resources these banks must attempt to analyse the past performance of the enterprises and predict future debt paying ability. Among numerous performance indicators available perhaps financial statement are one of the more important sources of information. Since financial statement tends to have volumes of data, one of the more useful techniques to analyse these statements is to use financial statements ratios. With this research we answered on the question: &#8220 ; ; ; are these traditional financial statement ratio values applicable to small and medium sized enterprises in Croatia and Slovenia?&#8221 ; ; ; Based on nine years data analysis we found that the traditional ratio values and standard norms are not applicable. We presented some other median values of selected indicators and the most used in judging the creditworthiness and future debt paying ability of small and medium enterprises in Croatia and Slovenia, as countries in transition.
