The Modernisation of the Primary School System in Croatia in the Political Context of the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement
The Croatian-Hungarian Settlement established a stable political system that enabled the modernisation of the Croatian school system as part of Croatia's autonomous affairs. This paper analyses the process of modernising Croatia’s primary school system based on the 1874 and 1888 Acts. These Acts are compared to the Public Primary Schools Act adopted by Hungary in 1868 and by Austria in 1869. The 1874 Croatian Primary Schools Act borrowed some solutions from its Austrian and Hungarian counterparts, adjusted them to Croatian circumstances, and introduced some original and more liberal solutions.
