Sažetak
The properties of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are beneficial for various applications, whereas for this work its photocatalytic performance is recognised as the main interest. Under ultraviolet radiation, nanosized TiO2 powders or thin-films in contact with many organic compounds can facilitate their oxidative decomposition, which is utilised for treatment of polluted water. Literature survey suggests that combinations of tin dioxide (SnO2) and TiO2 precursors may yield a hybrid photocatalyst with enhanced performance. Namely, catalytic behaviour of titania is usually enhanced by modifications, i.e. doping, to consequently yield hybrid heterostructured photocatalytic mixed-metal-oxides with reduced recombination susceptibility and broader bandgap. Also, achieving materials with advanced morphology (high specific surface) is critical for the functionality of the photocatalysts. Namely, simple photocatalytic system are achieved in form of coatings at reactor wall which brings about the importance of high specific surface. Various methods can be used to prepare materials having such configurations, for example electrochemical, chemical vapour deposition and hydrothermal methods, however especially convenient method to prepare modified photocatalysts is wet chemistry processing. Here we combined electrochemically assisted reaction to derive nanostructured vertically aligned titania tubes and chelation assisted sol- gel reaction to deposit SnO2. Using such strategy TiO2/SnO2 heterostructured composites with different TiO2/SnO2 ratios were easily prepared. Structural properties were investigated via powder and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (PXRD and GIXRD), morphologic via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, thermal via simultaneous differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA) and photocatalytic via spectroscopic analysis. It was observed that the course of developing favourable morphologic parameters is a controlling parameter for achieving competitive photocatalyst efficiency.
