Innovation and competitiveness dynamics of European Union member states
The purpose of this paper is to qualitatively and quantitatively compare and describe the innovation and competitiveness performance of European Union Member States. The comparative analysis of statistical data and five different methodologies has been conducted: Global Innovation Index ; Bloomberg Innovation Index ; European Innovation Scoreboard ; Global Competitiveness Index 4.0 ; Global Talent Competitiveness Index. The research has shown that Sweden has been categorized as an innovation leader by The European Innovation Scoreboard, and why it has achieved the best results according to all five methodologies of research. Finland, Denmark and Netherlands have followed Sweden as countries among the top five EU countries according to all methodologies, while Romania, Malta, Cyprus and Croatia have been recording the poorest results among the EU countries. There is a record of highly uneven economic performance and heterogeneous level of competitiveness among EU Member States, which is why the new Cohesion policy and its accompanying financial perspective for the period 2021-2027 is expected to facilitate a more convergent and homogeneous development of EU countries.
