Pathohistological association of right heart collagen with waist circumference: preliminary data
INTRODUCTION: The heart is a complex organ which consists of a multitude of cells including cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, macrophages, fibroblasts and many others. The share of fibroblasts in the animal model of rodents makes up to 50% of the total cell population, whose main role is collagen synthesis. Diseases of the cardiovascular system often result in associated changes in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the heart. Collagen (type I and III) is the main structural protein of the ECM that ensures the proper functioning of the heart as a hemodynamic pump and whose share varies depending on pathological events (coronary heart disease, heart failure). The correlation between right heart collagen prevalence and waist circumference (WC) is unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was approved by the Ethics Committee for Biomedical Research of the Clinical Hospital Center Osijek. Samples were obtained by excising pieces of tissue from the heart of the deceased, the apical area of the right ventricle, and the right atrium. The study included 6 deceased, 3 men and 3 women. Respondents were divided into 2 groups ; group with elevated (> 88 cm in women or > 102 cm in men) and normal waist circumference. After histological processing (hemalaun and eosin stain) the presence of collagen (%) in the histological sample of the right ventricle (apex) and right atrium was microscopically determined and the correlation with waist circumference was determined. RESULTS: The Mann-Whitney U test (Wilcoxon rank-sum) was used for statistical data processing. The result of the correlation of collagen presence in the apex of the right ventricle between the groups was p 0.6828, Z - 0.4086, U = 13, and the correlation of right atrial collagen between the groups was p 0.5697, Z - 0.5685, U = 12. CONCLUSION: The obtained results did not establish a statistically significant correlation between collagen prevalence and waist circumference. As limiting factors it is necessary to state a small sample, unequal distribution and the absence of other factors such as age and cause of death of the deceased.
