Application of tomato (S. lycopersicum) waste pectins in biogenic synthesis of selenium nanoparticles
Innovative process of biogenic synthesis of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using raw and purified pectin isolated from tomato waste as an encapsulating agent was developed. It was found that the type and concentration of the encapsulating agent significantly affected the mean diameter of the formed SeNPs. Results showed that tomato waste pectin used at concentrations of 0.1-1.0 mg/mL is a suitable encapsulating agent for the formulation of SeNPs, whether raw or purified, and it is comparable to synthetic encapsulating agents (such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)). Particles of the smallest size (93.1 nm) and the highest antioxidant potential were obtained by using raw pectin extracted from tomato waste at a concentration of 0.517 mg/mL.
