Higher Education in the Web Environment
The classic model of higher education is based on the lectures and verification of learning outcomes through the final examination. Such approach usually checks remembering of facts and understanding of basic concepts, which are the lowest levels of Bloom's systematization of knowledge. Checking higher levels of knowledge, such as applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating requires continuous monitoring of student's achievements during semester. Using tools based on web technologies, we have designed the advanced learning environment where learning and evaluation are based on communication, collaboration and interaction. Gathering of works in digital form and communication with students is done using Claroline LMS. The most significant component of realized environment is a web application for competence evaluation EVA-SMS, which is modularly integrated in the Claroline LMS. EVA-SMS allows peer review type of work and achievements evaluation, through surveys that are designed as review forms. Students are supposed to mutually review work of their colleagues and also to submit reports about their own achievements through semester, under mentorship and supervision of professors. When semester ends, all inputs are converted into numerical values according to predefined criteria and then system generates a final rank list of students enrolled to the course. By experimental application of described system, we have noticed a significant improvement in the quality of education and evaluation process. Research in this paper is done on data collected through the course "Web design" which was carried out in the winter semester of academic year "2015/16", at departments "Journalism" and "Media Design" of University North in Koprivnica, Croatia. By using Spearman's method, we have determined a correlation between final rank of each student acquired through EVA-SMS web application and a final grade achieved through classic final examination. Research results showed a high correlation between rank achieved through modern learning environment and the one acquired through classic examination. Observation confirmed that developed system is able to meet requirements of traditional higher education in terms of desired learning outcomes, but at the same time to quality respond to the needs of a modern information society.
