The Illyrian Renaissance: Literature in the European Borderlands
The presentation discusses the manuscript collection of Ragusan Renaissance literature, formed in mid-eighteenth century with the design of publishing it in print. While the project failed, the manuscript collection can show us how the Ragusan Renaissance canon looked in the middle of the eighteenth century. The irony is that this collection was purchased in the second half of the nineteenth century by Sir Arthur Evans, the famous British archeologist and antiquarian who for several years lived in Ragusa. His taking it to England effectively concealed it from researchers, until I unearthed it several years ago among Evans’ papers. I discuss this collection alongside Evans’ archeological, political, and ethnological interests in Illyria
