The effect of process parameters on mechanical behavior of selective laser melted Ti6Al4V alloy

Selective laser melting (SLM), as one of the most promising and rapidly growing powder bed fusion technologies, offers the possibility to influence the mechanical behavior of structural components by controlling various process parameters. Numerous factors affect the quality of SLM-ed components, but it was found that scanning speed and laser power have the greatest influence of all process parameters studied. Moreover, at different energy densities during SLM of Ti6Al4V ELI alloy, ultimate tensile strength can vary from quite low values of 400 MPa to extremely high values of 1400 MPa, in the case of vertical orientation of test specimens. This phenomenon generates high interest in terms of customizing mechanical properties of additively manufactured components. However, one reason for such a wide range of ultimate tensile strength is the presence of voids in different fractions due to specific combinations of process parameters that are frequently used. In this study, the range of process parameters is selected based on previous research findings to produce test specimens with the lowest possible porosity. In this way, the negative influence of high porosity values on monotonic and cyclic elastoplastic behavior could be minimized. The aim of this research in its early stage is to investigate the influence of laser power and scanning speed in the range of 200 - 250 W and 1000 - 1500 mm/s, respectively, on the product quality and mechanical behavior of SLM-ed Ti6Al4V ELI alloy. For this purpose, 36 tensile test specimens and 9 cubes were manufactured to investigate the mechanical behavior and overall product quality in terms of porosity, surface roughness and microstructural morphology.
