Hybrid Vehicles Emissions Assessment
The paper presents a novel method for estimating the gains of a hybrid powertrain in the form of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. The energy flow diagram of the hybrid electric vehicles was defined and a mathematical formulation of energy flows depending on the vehicle operating parameters was given. From the collected data in real driving conditions, according to the power binning method, estimation of gains was performed by minimizing the objective function whose input parameters were defined through Vehicle Specific Power analysis. To demonstrate the benefits of a hybrid drive two different management strategies were conducted. The first strategy uses only regenerative braking energy and minimizes NOx emissions, while the second uses the full potential of the hybrid drive, in addition to regenerative braking, it also uses the IC engine operating range shift to an efficient area and minimizes CO2 emissions. The obtained results show a reduction of NOx emissions by almost a third and a reduction of CO2 emissions by over 40%.
