Influence of Heat Treatment of Precursors on Structure of Aluminium Foams
Aluminum foams are a modern material that is finding increasing application in industry. In order to improve the mechanical properties and the final cellular structure, modifications of the initial raw materials - precursors - are increasingly used. Aluminum foams produced by the powder metallurgy route often show initial anisotropic expansion in the semi-solid state, which might have negative impact on the structure. Heat treatment of the precursors before the foaming has proven to be effective because it affects the microstructure of the precursor, and therefore the final structure of the aluminum foam. The effect of heat treatment below solidus temperature in commercial AluLight precursors AlSi10 (0.8 wt.% TiH2) and AlMgSi0.6 (0.4 wt.% TiH2) and its influence on the final cellular structure were investigated in this work.
