Swift heavy ion induced irradiation of graphene and graphite
Graphene is the finest example of a new class of 2D materials. Its exceptional physical properties have already earned him the “wonder material” nickname. Clearly, it is of great interest to find ways how to manipulate its properties because this could open up new pathways for applications of graphene. Ion irradiation is an attractive option, because it has a long-standing tradition as a tool for materials modifications, either by ion doping or by materials nanostructuring via directed energy deposition. In this contribution, after a brief overview of swift heavy ion irradiation of graphene is given, our recent results are presented. These include both experimental and theoretical contributions to this topic. As a bulk counterpart, response of the graphite to swift heavy ion irradiation is also discussed.
