REGULATION OF MITOPHAGY RECEPTORS BY PHOSPHORYLATION
Discoveries of autophagic receptors that recognize specific cellular cargo have opened a new chapter in autophagy field. Selective removal of damaged organelles or protein aggregates is essential for the proper cellular homeostasis and survival. We have recently identified and characterized Nix/Bnip3 and Bnip3 mitochondrial proteins as mitophagy receptors that, in LIR- dependent manner, interact with Atg/LC3/GABARAP proteins and recruit autophagic machinery to damaged mitochondria. Moreover, we have shown that Nix/Bnip3L mediates mitochondrial clearance during reticulocyte differentiation. At the moment, we are investigating the phosphorylation status of Nix/Bnip3L and Bnip3 in regulation of mitophagy. Our current results show that phosphorylation of mitophagy receptors Nix/Bnip3L and Bnip3 are essential for the initiation of mitoichondrial sequestration by autophagic machinery and are involved in fine-tuning of mitophagy.
