Methods of social work with persons with intellectual disabilities in Croatia: what have we learned from history, and what we have to change in future?

Social work practice with persons with intellectual disabilities has long history in Croatia. The aim of this paper presentation is to get insight into methods of social work practice with persons with intellectual disabilities in Croatian society during last decades. The institutionalization of persons with intellectual disabilities was based on certain methods that were used, while deinstitutionalization of persons with intellectual disabilities provides opportunities to social workers to use new methods of social work for persons with intellectual disabilities. The focus of this paper presentation is to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of social work methods with persons with intellectual disabilities that are or have not been used in Croatia: social case work, family work, social group work, and community organization. The analysis of these methods is going to be based on the analysis of Croatian laws, social work practice, and published papers about social work with persons with disabilities. In addition, the reasons why some of the methods are or have not been used in social work practice with persons with intellectual disabilities are going to be problematized. Finally, some ideas about how to make changes in methods of social work practice with persons with intellectual disabilities are going to be presented.
