Alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 lockdown

Aim: To present the result of anonymous survey on alcohol consumption during the Covid-19 lockdown. The life of the most people around the world has been changed since SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (SARS-CoV - severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus) started. According to WHO data, the first registered cases in Croatia were in February 26, in Bosnia and Herzegovina in March 05, and in Serbia in March 10. The presumption was that, due to stress caused by imposed isolation, the consumption of alcohol would start to increase. Methods: To get information on alcohol consumption in the period before and during the Covid-19 lockdown on-line anonymous survey was conducted in which a total of 930 persons participated: 542 from Croatia, 219 from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 169 from Serbia. Results: Among those who fulfilled the survey there were 659 females and 271 males, mostly between 20-25 years old, with high or middle education. The majority were employed, living in urban centres with higher number of inhabitants. The results showed no influence of isolation on consumption of alcohol. Quite opposite, 20.21% of examinees, which previously consumed alcohol, responded that during the lockdown stopped to use it. Only 0.4% of examinees started to consume alcohol exactly because of isolation. Conclusion: This research gives a new light on everyday practice of people during Covid-19 pandemic in the Western Balkan countries, known as region where alcohol consumption is considerable widespread.
