Diverse Applications of Slags in the Construction Industry
When used in civil engineering, slags are specific construction materials that possess different properties depending on their origin and subsequent processing. Their characteristics determine their applicability in different areas of the construction industry. The most common applications of metallurgical slags in the construction industry according to the literature are presented in this chapter, which covers slag application in cement production, cement composites (mortar and concrete), soil stabilization for road construction purposes, unbound pavement and cement-treated aggregate base courses, asphalt mixtures, and pervious concrete pavements. In each application, laboratory and field research results are presented to promote their use. The advantages and disadvantages as well as the environmental impact of slag utilization in each of the specific areas are provided. At the end of the chapter, concluding observations are given, in which the authors emphasize that each type of slag is distinct as a material and requires investigation separately before its final application in construction.
