Loudspeaker Equalization in Real-Life Multichannel Environments
Most audio reproduction systems are based on a number of loudspeakers that have to be placed on certain pre-defined positions in space around the listener(s). The basic assumption is that all loudspeakers have the same sensitivity, same directivity, a flat amplitude, and a linear phase frequency response. Usually, this assumption is mostly satisfied and in the standard stereo loudspeaker arrangement, there are often no sound field artefacts that can be connected to the non- linearity of the two loudspeakers. In systems with an increasing number of loudspeakers, such as surround stereophonic systems, Ambisonics or WFS, one must take more care in checking these assumptions. In this paper, methods of loudspeaker equalization are discussed and an equalization algorithm using FIR filters is developed and tested on a real-life reproduction system that takes into account not only non-linearities of the loudspeakers alone, but also the influence of the acoustics of the listening room. Finally, a subjective evaluation of the change in quality of the equalized system is discussed.
