Efficacy of Reciprocating Instrument in the Removal of Bioceramic and Epoxy Resin-based Sealers- Micro CT Analysis
Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reciprocating instrument in the removal of bioceramic and resin- based sealer using micro CT analysis. Methods: Forty (n=40) extracted single-rooted human teeth with single canals, without previous endodontic treatment, root caries, external resorption, were selected for this study. The root canals were instrumented with Reciproc instrument, size R25 (VDW, Munich, Germany), according to the instructions of the manufacturer. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups (n=20), according to the root canal filling material. In the first group (n=20), root canals were obturated with combination of AH Plus sealer and single cone guttapercha, R25. In the second group (n=20), combination of bioceramic gutta-percha (size 25, taper 6%) and bioceramic sealer (TotalFill BC) was used. After one week, retreatment of all specimens (n=40) was performed using the Reciproc instruments (R25). Specimens were scanned in a micro CT device after the filling procedure and after the retreatment procedure with reciprocating instrument to analyze the difference of the filling remnants. Statistical analysis was performed using Mann Whitney U test (p<0.05). Results: Combination of bioceramic sealer and bioceramic gutta- percha was more effectively removed from root canals (4.01±3.13 mm3) in comparison to combination of epoxy resin-based sealer and gutta-percha (6.96±2.70 mm3). The volume of the root canal filling materials decreased significantly in both experimental groups (p<0.05) but none of the materials was removed completely. Conclusion: Reciprocating instrument was more effective in removal of bioceramic sealer than resin-based sealer although none of the root canal filling materials were completely removed from the root canals.
