Non-Destructive Examination of Membrane Walls Welding During Water Tube Boiler Manufacturing

Membrane walls represent most used way to ensure efficient heat transfer between flue gasses and medium present in the tubes. Standards elements of the membrane wall are steel tubes and bars joined together by welding. This requires implementation of appropriate quality control system, which can reduce to minimum chances that welds with deficiencies leave manufacturing hall. In accordance with standards for both design and testing, following NDT methods have been chosen: visual testing (VT) for both dimensional and overall supervision of welding process, penetrant testing (PT) for detection of indications open to the examined surface and radiographic testing (RT) for detection of volumetric deficiencies. Technical characteristics of implemented NDT methods are shown in the experimental part of the paper. Results have shown that only by combination of both surface and volumetric NDT methods can achieve reliable results. While stating reliable results, it must not be assumed that this means total lack of deficiencies in general. Experimental part was conducted during manufacturing process of membrane walls in ĐĐ TEP d.o.o.
